WELCOME

This is your resource for information about what people do to cause fires, how they respond to fires, and why.

Mission
The way that humans perceive and interact with their environments largely determines how well they will perform in preventing and responding to fires. This site is intended to provide you with information that will help you improve the design of fire safety systems, hardware, emergency planning, education, and prevention efforts. Helping people perform better in their efforts to prevent and respond to fires is the most cost effective, but least appreciated and understood approach to fire safety.

Content in this site is divided between two sections...

Principles
covers the basic fundamentals of what people do during fire emergencies, and why. A simple model that categorizes these principles emphasizes the interactive nature of human behavior. The principles have been compiled from both research directly investigating human behavior during fires, and from those parts of broader social and behavioral science research that the author believes directly relevant to this site.
Essays
are very brief topical reviews and editorial opinions that deal with a particular area of concern. Content in these are linked with hypertext to relevant basic principles.
News
covers recent developments in the area of human behavior and fire safety.
