Recent Developments in the area of Human Behavior and Fire Safety

Odor Don't Wake Sleepers
In a recent study conducted by two researchers at Brown University, odors, unlike sounds, were found to NOT awaken sleeping persons regardless of the stage of sleep. Fire Academy revises "Fire-related Human Behavior" course
U.S. Fire Academy is now teaching its revised "Fire-related Human Behavior" course for the Degrees at a Distance Program curriculum. A innovative approach has been taken in the newest revision to the above mentioned course. In this version, fictional fire incidents were generated by authors to introduce and explain key points. As the incidents unfold, annotations are used to discuss the key points. To date, the newest version has been well-received by both instructors and students. Fire fighters earn credit towards college degrees by taking these courses. For more information, follow this link: www.usfa.fema.gov/nfa/tr_ddp.htm. (11/99)
Intelligibility of voice alarm systems.
In the November/December issue of NFPA Journal, Alisa Wolf discusses changes in the 1999 edition of NFPA 72 that pertain to the intelligibility of voice alarm systems. In this most recent edition of the Fire Alarm Code, "intelligibility" is now defined, and its measurement is recommended in an appendix note. The article discusses the importance of intelligibility, ways that it can be improved, and some of the issues around its testing. (11/99)
SFPE human behavior and fire task group.
A Society of Fire Protection Engineers task group on human behavior and fire held a second meeting on November 18, 1999. This task group is one of several convened by SFPE to generate guidance for engineers dealing with specific areas of concern. However, a report from this group is not expected until early 2001.
